Hugh Hartshorne (b. 1719) was a Philadelphia merchant. Hugh Hartshorne's son, William Hartshorne (1742-1816), began a business in Antigua in 1761. The shipment of flour noted in this bill of lading was destined for his business. Between 1773 and 1775 William Hartshorne moved to a plantation near Alexandria, Virginia, where he was a friend and business associate of George Washington.
